What is Cannabis Flour?

Canna-Flour is flour made from the flower of cannabis that you are able to add to all your favorite recipes. It can replace a portion of white or wheat flour, and can even be sprinkled on top of food. The different types of ground-down bud and their effects range depending on the different strain of cannabis you use, such as Sativa, Indica, and Hybrid.  Sativa strains will typically provide a more energizing experience. If you desire to maintain a productive and active lifestyle, Sativa will be your best option. If you desire a more relaxed experience, or you are even seeking a sleep aid, Indica strains are the preferred choice. Hybrid strain will have varying levels of both Sativa and Indica, and your budtender at Hightops Medical Dispensary can help you determine which combination is right for you.  As research expands, there is a huge amount of information about Indica and Sativa strains as it relates to creating your own edibles, and we are here to help.  At Hightops Dispensary, we have many Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid flower options, so you will never run out of opportunities to try new strains, and new recipes.

Why Edibles?

People prefer edibles for many reasons. They are convenient to carry and can be discreetly administered whenever medication is needed. Edibles provide long-lasting symptom relief from the slow digestion of the cannabis. Cost is another factor in someone’s decision to try edibles. Strong effects can be achieved at a lower cost to the patient.

How do I make Cannabis Flour?

The proof is in the prep  Make sure the cannabis is as dry as possible to prevent any mold growing while in storage.  It is also important to remove stems and seeds leaving them intact could make the flour and recipes taste bitter. Here’s how you make it:

Step One – Sorting: To decrease the bitterness in your recipe, pick out as many seeds and stems as you can.

Step Two – Grinding: Take out your spice mill, coffee grinder or other appliance that can finely grind food items. Grind up the bud until it turns into a fine powder, similar to the consistency of wheat flour.

Step Three – Storing: Put your new cannabis flour in a tightly-sealed container and store it somewhere cool and dark.  Partially replace some newly made flour into your recipe!

How Can I Use Cannabis Flour in my favorite recipes?

Generally, you can substitute Canna-Flour for a portion of your favorite recipe’s flour requirement.  Start with a 10% substitution and gradually work your way up to a 20% substitution.  You can start by pre-mixing your cannabis flower by sifting it with your regular baking flour, and continue to make your favorite baked good.  Sifting the Cannabis Flour together with your regular flour is very important for consistent dosing throughout your baked goods.

Cannabis Flour is best used in rising baked goods such as breads, cakes and cookies. However, you can even utilize hearty sauces and stews to use your flower in. Simply stir the ground flower into the simmering stew as you add other spices and flavors and voila! A yummy experienced-packed dish!

How do I store Cannabis Flour?

You can mix your regular flour and Cannabis Flower together for baking, but consider storing pre-measured portions in vacuum-sealed bags to protect it from oxidation.  You can also use a tightly-sealed jar to store the cannabis flour and keep it cool out of sunlight.

What are the effects of cooking with Cannabis Flour and when will I feel them?

Edibles, unlike smoking cannabis, do not affect the lungs at all.  Edibles are absorbed through the stomach and intestines, passed through the liver, absorbed into the bloodstream, and sent to the brain.  Consumers of cannabis edibles should expect to wait forty minutes to an hour to feel the effects of the edibles, but those effects can last anywhere from six to eight hours. It’s a smart idea to only eat a small amount and test the effects of your newly-made food before increasing dosage in your recipes.
